Description

Geography:
The pine, “pinus” in Latin, is particularly widespread on the northern shores of the Mediterranean Sea.

Particularities: The pine belongs to the evergreen trees category and is characterized by a high trunk and it has an umbrella-shaped canopy. It can reach up to thirty meters high and can live for more than 250 years.

Symbology: In the common iconography, the pine is often represented as the symbol of marital bliss; the pine cone as well with pine nuts is the symbol of reproduction and fertility. But it can also have the meaning of longevity, loyalty and rebirth.

Curiosities:

  • In the ancient Greece, the pines were dedicated to Rhea, representation of “the totality which encloses the pairs of opposites”: therefore, it appeared as an androgynous entity from which the creation was born.
  • In the Greek legends, and in the oriental ones, we can find the pine as the symbol of the sacrificial tree, the tree of the initiatory ordeal.
  • The pine was also a sacred tree to Dionysus and Attis. The tree thrives in warm soils, the same soils that allow the perfect preservation of the wine.
The pleasant essence that flows from the trunk of the pine is comparable to the product of the wine, and that’s why the pine tree belongs to Dionysus, the lord of matureness and procreation.
  • In Japan, the pine was used to build temples and tools for religious celebrations. This happened especially in celebrations during which the married couples were invited to drink a cup of tea next to a pine.
  • In China the pine is part of a set of symbols whose meaning is strictly linked to longevity.
